Seminar 1

Host: KPMG

Title: The role of Forensic Accountants in tackling organised crime

Overview:

Since the enactment of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 law enforcement agencies have had new powers to tackle organised criminals by seizing their assets or prosecuting them for money laundering of their dirty money. In these types of cases there is often a complex web of financial transfers, company trading, property purchases and offshore investments, by which the criminals seek to hide their money or clean it to bring it back into the UK. Forensic accountants can play a crucial role in assisting investigators to understand what the criminals have done. This can include to track down the criminal money, finding and seizing assets for confiscation and to provide the evidence to support a money laundering conviction.

With the use of specialist technology and applied accountancy expertise, investigations can be shortened and the chances of success heightened. Too often the criminals have used professionals, sometimes corruptly, to act on their behalf. Private sector forensic accountants can enable law enforcement to challenge this from an equally strong professional position, by providing the expertise to produce the key criminal evidence to lead to conviction and confiscation.

What you will learn from this seminar:
  • The type of support to investigations forensic accountants can provide.
  • What forensic technology aligned with accountancy techniques can bring to your investigation.
  • How Corporate Intelligence (or due diligence) can assist in getting to “hard to reach” open source data.
  • How security considerations in working with the private sector can be handled.
  • The role of an “expert witness” in forensic accountancy.
  • How this type of support can be procured, and what it might cost.

The seminar will use case studies of successful actions in both private and public sector investigations to demonstrate how forensic accountants can work with law enforcement to assist their investigations.
